Frans Mortelmans (1 May 1865 in Antwerp – 11 April 1936 in Antwerp) was a Belgian painter, draughtsman and engraver. He initially produced portraits, history paintings, marines and genre scenes but later specialised in still lifes, and in particular flower pieces, with which he achieved considerable success.
This lovely painting is a real eye-catcher. At its size, 24" tall x 30" wide x 1.5" deep, and painted on gallery wrapped canvas (no frame necessary), the roses are life-sized. As you look at this painting, the smell of roses comes to mind, and the feeling that you could reach out and pick one of the roses out of the basket. This lesson in David Jansen's floral class was so fun to paint. As you can see, we are heading down a path to more impressionistic style in this class.
